Conclusion It is of interest that although the interview with the mother was clearly about education, and had been in progress for some time before the ‘toy’ schedule was given, the highest average rank given to statement E (to help them when they go to school) was only 2·80. This choice, one might have thought, would have been the socially approved response for those with no clear views about toys. However, this does not appear to have been the case. In view of the support obtained for the four hypotheses, the research can be said to have demonstrated a social class differentiation in mothers’ conceptions of the uses of toys.

However, within the skill area the middle class place a greater emphasis upon the use of language in their response to the statement, ‘Showing them how things work’, whereas within the same area the working class place a greater emphasis upon the use of language in response to the statement, ‘Teaching them everyday tasks like dressing, and using a knife and fork’. Can these differences in emphasis be accounted for in terms of differences in the relevance of these two areas for the social classes?

The working-class child may have to learn what for the middle-class child is given by his primary socialization. It would seem that, even at the age of five years, there is differential access to processes which facilitate the development of ability and the opportunity to benefit from school, in terms of the current definitions of the form and contents of education. Summary Different conceptions of the uses of toys were analysed in a sample of 351 families. The following hypotheses were tested: (1) That there would be social class differences in consensus concerning the mothers’ conceptions of the uses of toys.
